CENTIPEDE

A warm season, thick sod forming, uniform growing, and medium to light green colored grass. Centipede is probably the lowest maintenance of the warm season grasses. Centipede seed came from Southern China in the early 1900’s and since become one of the most popular grasses in the southern states.

This creeping perennial is well adapted to the sandy, acidic soils of low fertility and requires low maintenance. It spreads by stolons and has a coarse texture with short upright stems that grow to about 3-5 inches and requiring less mowing, survives in mild cold temperatures as long as there aren’t several hard freezes since it doesn’t go into a true dormancy and with light freezes will turn brown but as soon as the temperature rises it will recover and re-greens.

Being a low growing grass it is a favorite of busy lawn growers with a much longer period of days being added to the mowing cycle. Low fertilization (with low phosphorus) requirements can be met by a yearly application. Too much nitrogen can produce growth but cause problems with insects or disease. Centipede is rather drought tolerant and when healthy is aggressive enough to choke out weeds and other grasses. In the south this grass will remain green throughout the year. Although the roots are not as deep as Bahia or Bermuda, its close to the ground growth allows for better conservation of water and helps fight drought. Slightly shade tolerant and full sun.

EMPIRE ZOYSIA

When you’re seeking a thick blanket of deep green to make a striking appearance in your yard, you’ll appreciate the superior performance and beauty of Empire Zoysia. Discovered in Brazil, amid the lush, tropical foliage, there’s no wonder Empire thrives in both hot and humid as well as desert areas. You might not expect turf grass this strong to also be soft, but Empire beckons you to take barefoot walks across its plush carpet of densely packed blades. Especially created for family outings and backyard picnics, Empire welcomes a variety of activities without taking extensive wear and tear.

Tight blade growth also contributes to the depth of color found in Empire Zoysia. With its wide blades and luscious dark green hue that lasts through much of the winter, it’s truly a turf grass that will make your neighbors jealous. You’ll also enjoy greatly enhanced curb appeal for your home.

It is one of the few grasses rated to perform well in all zones. As hardy as it is attractive, Empire has a deep, thick root structure, and is more drought tolerant than most varieties of Zoysia once established. In addition, slow growth plus natural chinch bug and chemical resistance means your lawn will require less maintenance, mowing, and watering than with other types of warm season grass.

Durable enough for professional use, too, Empire is a favorite of homeowners as well as golf courses, theme parks, master planned communities, office complexes, and more.

PALMETTO ST. AUGUSTINE

Saint Augustine lawns are a popular wide bladed (coarse) lawn planted throughout many areas of the Southeastern USA. It is a warm season grass that does not handle cold weather very well.

St. Augustine is warm season, perennial grass that is a widely used. A native grass of tropical origin that extends from water marshes (salty & fresh), lagoon fringes, and sandy beach ridges.

Characteristics: Coarse, wide bladed, dense dark green.

Saint Augustine grass grows from the Carolinas to the Texas Gulf coast and from mid California down. This is one of the oldest coastal grasses and in its different varieties and strains it has been found from the Carolinas to Australia and New Zealand. Several coastal areas of Africa and all through the tropics St. Augustine can be found growing. Man has managed to move it inland for ground cover and pasturage. And as long as moisture and soil requirements are met it makes for beautiful lawns. It is a thick bladed grass and with good maintenance can produce a thick, beautiful dark green lawn and requires full sun to moderate shade.

Adaptation: Areas of moist, semi-fertile soils, high temperatures, coastal and bordering areas, sun and minimal shade.
